East Coast Prep traveled Sunday to take on Sacred Heart University, a 6-time Northeast
Conference champion. The game ended in a 16-16 tie putting the Firebirds at 2-0-1 for the
season.
At the end of the first quarter, both teams were scoreless. For ECP’s first score, QB Jay Kastanin
(Needham, Needham, MA) had a long run on fourth and short resulting in a first down.
Kastanin’s long pass to Elijah Smalls (Cedar Creek, Egg Harbor City,NJ)set up ECPs first score. Joe
Fontana (Southington, Southington, CT) ran the ball in for the go-ahead score. Matt Whitney
(North Kingston, North Kingston, RI) scored the PAT.
In the second quarter, Whitney kicked a field goal giving the Firebirds a 10-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, QB Chase Vaughn (Milton, Milton, MA) led ECU down the field with passes
to Matthew Chandler (Hagerty, Oviedo, FL) and Elijah Smalls. A handoff to Kameron Robbins
(Holy Trinity, Long Island, NY) from Kastanin and a pass to Peter Bibby (Bishop Hendricken,
Johnston, RI) gave the Firebirds a 16-0 lead.
SHU scored late in the game with a Hail Mary pass. With no time left, Ejike Brown (Bellaire,
Houston, TX) blocked SHU’s PAT ending the game with a 16-16 tie.
The defense was led by Will Marable (Holy Spirit, Galloway, NJ) with multiple sacks. Ja Son
Prevard (St. Joe Academy, Atlantic City, NJ) and Merage Whitehead (Liverpool, Liverpool, NJ)
both had interceptions.
The Firebirds travel to New Haven, CT, Sunday, September 25 for a 1:00 game against New
Haven University.
